What it is

Neuromodulators — the basics.

Neuromodulators are a Health Canada–approved class of injectable that temporarily relax specific facial muscles. When those muscles relax, the lines they create soften — and over time, the skin gets a chance to recover from being repeatedly creased.

You may know them by their brand names: Botox, Dysport, Nucieva, Xeomin, or Letybo. At Vivid, I most commonly use Dysport and Nucieva. Botox brand is available on request.

Results typically last 3 to 4 months, after which a repeat appointment keeps them consistent.

Areas treated

Areas I treat.

  • Forehead lines — softens horizontal lines and prevents them from etching deeper.
  • 11 lines (between the brows) — relaxes the muscles that create the angry-looking fold.
  • Crow's feet — softens the lines that appear around the eyes when smiling or squinting while keeping your natural expression.
  • Lip flip — relaxes the muscle above the upper lip for a slightly fuller appearance, without adding volume. Lasts 8–12 weeks.
  • Brow lift — small, strategic doses to gently lift the brow.
  • Bunny lines — the lines that appear on the sides of the nose when scrunching.
  • Masseter (jaw slimming / TMJ) — useful cosmetically for jaw slimming, and therapeutically for clenching and grinding.
  • Chin (orange peel) — softens dimpling of the chin.
  • Neck bands (Platysmal bands) — refines the neck and defines the jawline.
  • Underarm hyperhidrosis — reduces excessive sweating.
Who it's for

Preventative is most effective. Consistency makes the difference.

Preventative treatment — starting before lines become deeply etched — is consistently more effective. The earlier we begin softening the muscles that create those lines, the longer your skin stays smooth and the less product is typically needed over time.

That said, neuromodulators remain effective for clients with more established lines as well. Results may take slightly longer to fully appreciate, and consistency is what makes the real difference. Clients who maintain regular treatment every 3–4 months see the best long-term results, regardless of age.

Neuromodulators aren't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding or for certain neurological conditions. We'll review your full health history at consultation to make sure it's the right fit.

What to expect

Your first appointment, step by step.

  1. Consultation. We sit down and talk about what's bothering you, what you've tried, and what you're hoping for. No pressure to book treatment that day.
  2. Plan. I'll recommend the areas and dosing that make sense for you specifically — not a one-size template.
  3. Treatment. A series of small injections. Most clients describe it as a quick pinch. The whole appointment is usually 20–30 minutes including consent and aftercare review.
  4. Aftercare. A few simple guidelines for the next 24–48 hours. I'll give you a printed and digital copy.
  5. Follow-up. A complimentary check-in around 2–3 weeks if you'd like adjustments.
Pain & downtime

Quick, comfortable, essentially no downtime.

Most clients find treatment quite manageable. I'm known for a gentle technique, and the injections themselves are quick. The full appointment usually takes 20–30 minutes, including consultation and aftercare review.

Downtime is essentially none. You can return to work or your day immediately after. Some clients experience small bumps at the injection sites that settle within an hour, and occasional bruising that resolves in a few days.

Results timeline

When you'll see results.

  • Day 2–4: First signs of softening.
  • Day 7–14: Full effect.
  • Day 28–42: Results feel their best.
  • Month 3–4: Time to book your maintenance appointment, before the creasing fully returns.

Frequently asked

Botox questions, honestly answered.

How many units will I need?

This depends entirely on you — your muscle strength, the areas being treated, and your goals. On average, clients start with around 30–50 units, depending on how many areas we're treating. I'll give you a personalized recommendation at consultation, and we can adjust at follow-up if needed.

Will I look frozen or unnatural?

No. Whether you prefer softened movement or fully relaxed muscles, Botox can look entirely natural when it's placed thoughtfully — natural doesn't mean barely visible. You'll still see meaningful, noticeable results. We'll discuss the look you're after at your consultation and tailor the dose to suit your face and your goals.

How long does it last?

Three to four months on average. Some people metabolize it slightly faster or slower depending on lifestyle and how you take care of your skin.

When should I book my next appointment?

Typically retreatment is 3–4 months later, or when you see your muscle movement return almost completely. Maintaining consistent treatments actually requires less product over time.

Is it safe?

Neuromodulators have decades of clinical data behind them and are Health Canada–approved. All medical treatments have risks although rare, and we'll review them honestly before any treatment.

What's the difference between Botox, Dysport, and Nucieva?

They're all neuromodulators with the same purpose, but slightly different molecular structures, spread, and onset times. I'll explain the differences and recommend what fits you best.

Can I have Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. There isn't enough clinical research to confirm whether neuromodulators are safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so I won't treat in either case. We can plan for treatment when you're ready.

What if I've never had Botox before?

We start conservative, see how you respond, and adjust at follow-up. I'd rather under-treat and touch up than over-treat for your first time. There's no obligation to book treatment after the consultation.

Can you treat TMJ or jaw clenching?

Yes — masseter treatment is one of my most common requests, both for jaw slimming and for relief from grinding and clenching.
